Kawakawa is a traditional medicinal plant of te ao Māori — also known as the New Zealand pepper tree. Also known as Piper excelsum, it produces a lightly spicy, refreshing brew that is warming, uplifting, and deeply connected to Aotearoa's natural heritage.
University of Auckland researchers have identified more than 60 biologically active compounds in kawakawa leaves. Key among them is pellitorine — the most abundant compound — which has natural analgesic properties and plays an active role in reducing inflammation in the body. Yangambin has shown potent anti-inflammatory effects on the cardiovascular system in human trials, while dopamine acts on the digestive system to soothe gastrointestinal complaints and may assist with insulin regulation — providing a scientific basis for kawakawa's long-standing use in rongoā Māori.
